public service announcement

assignment 2:
based on the visual aesthetic you've been developing in your zines, design a psa (public service announcement) poster that might be seen wheat pasted on the street or in the subway. think big, bold, and eye catching among hundreds of posters.

timeline:
1. first week, sketches and thinking with type, 6.16
2. second week, tight composition, 6.23
3. third week, final, 6.29

research:
1. purchase ellen lupton's "thinking with type" and read it!
2. thorough understanding and application of the first two chapters, "letter" and "text"
3. the book's website: thinking with type
4. lupton's student projects

process:
1. choose your topic:
a. do not choose something known - i.e., no anti-smoking, hiv/aids, starving children in africa, no child left behind, stop world hunger, save the whales, dolphins, go green, etc.
b. choose a topic that is interesting to you, that you'd like to share, that is related to nyc (may include any or all of the fice boroughs).
c. use only typography and graphic elements
i. no illustration or photography
ii. examples:

iii. look particularly at the file labeled 'punch out holes,' it has text around that explains what the designers were trying to accomplish from experimental jetset:

iv. i agree, at least in the punched out holes example, experimetnal jetset uses visual links rather than 'conceptual ideas. we still have a lot of in class discussing ahead about concept in graphic design. in advertising, it's relativly easy. but regarding graphic design, it' still a conversation underway.
d. do your best to relate your design to a visual idea from your topic, or better, an abstract concept that conveys the message using intellect, emotion, or humor.
i. don;t preach, don't caution.
ii. encourage the viewer to see your point in a positive way.
